A renowned Taiwanese watercolorist, RAN In-Ting (1903-1979) was under the influence of Ishikawa Kinichiro and showed a pure and unadorned style in the early stage of his career. After entering the middle stage of his career, Ran moved away from the coloring approach of Western watercolor and incorporated the artistic mood and brushstroke of Chinese ink painting his work, establishing a distinctive style of watercolor expression. In terms of techniques and forms, Chinese ink painting and Western watercolor share various similarities. Therefore, Ran dedicated his time to explore and study the subtle integration of their expression and spirituality in order to display rich and diversified approaches and effects in painting. This exhibition showcases nearly thirty ink and watercolor works created by Ran from the 1950s to 1970s. Through the artist’s interpretation and transformation, the two different creative media have been unified to give birth to a body of Eastern watercolor paintings with a unique style.

Ran’s ink paintings revealed the artist’s masterful use of composition, line and blank space, which conveyed a sense of lively momentum and dynamics. His watercolors adopted brushwork, coloring and composition similar and corresponding to his ink paintings despite the difference in forms and colors. Ran utilized the alternation of forms and colors in watercolor to transform the expression of line, blank space and rendering in traditional ink painting, and mastered the wetness in images, the visual quality of lines, the elaborate combination of blank space and colors to vividly portray the local people and landscape with their characteristic charm through the interplay of forms, colors, light and shadow. His brushstroke is unrestrained but delicate and his palette elaborate yet refined, brilliantly capturing the Taiwanese local custom and atmosphere. His passion of delineating this land also manifests in his use of the first-class, hand-made “Antique Waterman Watercolor Paper,” which, when used with mineral paint, can ensure the lasting colors and condition of the paintings and allow these works to be permanently preserved. Such efforts and dedication have demonstrated the artist’s abundant affection and devotion to his native land.
