The Fringe of Consciousness is the display of Lu’s artistic thinking and logic system. He either pays attention to the undervalued marginal zone in the quotidian life or things that are hard to define, and converts them through means of contemporary art, creating a unique artistic context that connects art and the daily life. Or, he de-familiarizes the everyday experiences people are familiar with to explore the multiplicity in representing things and events of the daily life.
Several series are on view in the exhibition. In Chronic Series, Lu uses heavy black marble to interpret the flimsy texture of plastic bags, revealing an intriguing sense of contradiction between lightness and weight through an interplay of the visual sense and tactile sense. In The Bygones Are Returning and Still There, Lu chooses white marble to transform the visual volume of quilts and pillows. The cotton bedding people used to know is now transformed with the texture of cold, solid marble, which challenges the viewer’s everyday familiarity while expanding the artistic expressiveness of the material. The series of Untitled embodies the artist’s contemplation on the materiality of “paint.” In addition to being a material, Lu allows paint to become a medium for his self-expression, exploring its multiple possibilities. The Fringe of Consciousness unveils Lu’s endeavor to traverse the nameless marginal zone by using contemporary art. It is also an innovative attempt to explore and expand the mode of thinking that people are accustomed to. The art today is not a simple pursuit of visual beauty that pleases the eye, but the transformation and remaking of the familiar and the unfamiliar; a brand new development and realization of the daily perception and the dimension of thinking.
