 [ About the Exhibition ]

Chini Gallery will present The Voice of Video—New Media Art from Taiwan, which showcases the video works of the Animal Farm series by renowned Taiwanese artist, Ching-Hui CHOU, and the art project, Mimi Lucy—Back to Life, consisted of video, installation, and photography collaboratively created by rising young Taiwanese artists, Huei-Ming CHANG and Chi-Yu LIAO. The two specially selected new media projects will enable art lovers at Art Stage to further understand Taiwanese artists’ innovative interpretation and artistic expressiveness of new media.

 Video Work of Animal Farm
The first project on view in The Voice of Video is the video work from Ching-Hui CHOU’s Animal Farm. Last year, Chini Gallery presented the photography exhibition of Animal Farm, which was highly well-received by collectors, art critics, and curators. The review of the artworks and the market reaction were both exceptionally positive. This year, Chini Gallery presents the video series of Animal Farm for the first time at Art Stage, giving audience that love CHOU’s work an opportunity to see the complete content of this project. The different contents of the project’s nine videos are developed from the nine major themes of the project’s photographic works. For each video, brand new props and sets were produced. Created with individual storylines and the aesthetics of high-resolution video, the video works convey the artist’s critical view on the diverse society in a visually pleasing yet humorous, satirical style, unveiling the glamor and dilemma of modern life. Two photographs of Animal Farm will also be on view this time. The dual voices of photography and video will achieve a stronger perceptual resonance, leading the audience to reflect on and re-examine what we know and feel about contemporary life.

MimiLucy—BACK TO LIFE
The art project, MimiLucy, is created by two highly anticipated young Taiwanese artists, Huei-Ming CHANG and Chi-Yu LIAO. Since the project’s first chapter in 2009, NEVER GIVE UP, they have presented the second chapter, BACK TO LIFE. Following the former, the latter continues with two fictitious film characters, Mimi and Lucy, who appear as a scientist and a young girl in the work and commence a mysterious journey. With single-channel and two-channel videos, mixed media installation, and digital photography, the exhibition guides the audience to glimpse the suspicious, mysterious, and ambiguous relationship between Mimi and Lucy. It explores an artist’s dual relationship between the reality and the virtual world as well as the potentiality of video and image in the irreversible reality of life.

The exhibition enhances the visibility of Taiwanese art and artists, increases the exchange between Taiwan and the world, and strengthens artistic and cultural collaboration. Moreover, it also serves as a platform that offers outstanding Taiwanese artists a chance to gain more exposure, introducing talented Taiwanese artists and their works the international art scene. By doing so, it creates more collaboration opportunities between the artists and international institutions, and promotes excellent Taiwanese artists and artworks in the international art scene, expanding the territory and possibility of Taiwanese art.
