Overview

Since the period of the Japanese rule, there have been precedents of Taiwanese female artists who pursued studies abroad, for instance Chen Chin (1907-1998). However, after the war, Taiwan was influenced by the unique political environment, rendering studying abroad a difficult thing under the circumstance of the martial law. Until the early 1980s, political control gradually loosened, and many female artists went abroad to pursue further education and returned afterwards (unlike those who went abroad previously, who mostly became expatriates), or frequently traveled between Taiwan and the places where they received their education. These female artists have also become a critical force in the Taiwanese art scene prior to and after the lifting of the martial law, throughout the 1990s and in the 21st century.

These female artists returned from abroad, on the one hand, have absorbed Western avant-garde thinking, and on the other hand, have endeavored to preserve or carry forward certain characteristics of their culture as if sounding diverse tones but making unifying resonance in music. This has been a very distinctive group and phenomenon that are worthy of more observation and exploration in the development of Taiwanese contemporary art.

This exhibition features nine female artists that returned from abroad, who are born between 1955 and 1971. Except Jo Hsieh (1967-2017)and Hung Yi-Chen (1971-2011), who both have unfortunately departed from this world at the prime of their life, the other artists are all at the peak of their creative career, and their artistic achievements have been recognized and cherished by the contemporary art circle. Today, their works are on view in one exhibition, which represents great significance in art history, and we sincerely invite all to enjoy and appreciate their art.
