Overview

The evolution and innovation have rendered contemporary ink art charged with vibrant energies and filled with infinite possibilities. On the other hand, contemporary artists are also faced with the topic of how to continue the spirit of ink creation through exploring and applying different media in ink art while developing unique vocabularies in individual ink creations.

 

Chini Gallery is proud to present three outstanding artists from Taiwan at 2019 Ink Now, including Teng Pu-Chun, Hsu Yu-Jen, Lee Kuang-Yu. The three artists will demonstrate the wide range of possibilities of contemporary ink art through diversified media, such as ink on paper and sculpture.

 

In Contemporary Expression Zone is a solo exhibition of Teng Pu-Chun’s new works. Employing his distinctive “rolled wrinkle stroke,” the artist creates delicate and splendid elaborate-style landscape. His style of magic realism constitutes of uniquely formed and ingeniously constructed landscape depicted from multiple perspectives, revealing a fantastic yet realistic world of imagination posited between reality and illusion.

 

Renowned Taiwanese sculptor Lee Kuang-Yu presents his new work, entitled Landscape Scroll Series-Dual Interests, in the Installation Art Project Zone. Adopting the three-dimensional sculptural form, Lee employs calligraphic line that embodies a grammatological quality and sense of rhythm, accompanied with the blankness of openwork, to delineate the landscape in his imagination through a spatiality reminiscent of ancient lyrical poetry.

 

Besides, Hsu Yu-Jen’s celebrated Rough-Brush Ink Painting Series is showcased. Adopting the technique of rapidly wrinkling with dry brush, Hsu had forged a vitality refined by hardship and frustration. His rough, unadorned ink expression and depiction of freestanding plants seem to defy all difficulties with resilience, conveying the endless power and energy overflowing from life and art.

 

Through the collaboration with these three remarkable artists, Chini Gallery hopes to lead the guests and visitors to reflect upon the essence of Eastern ink and its spirit through different forms of ink creation created with contemporary artistic approaches. While abandoning, integrating and revolutionizing traditional ink expression, their works display the distinct spirituality and philosophy of ink art, forming new ink worlds while conveying essential cultural meaning and historical value of traditional ink.

Different from the elegance embodied by traditional literati painters, his work displays a sense of individual carefreeness; in particular, the unique technique of "rolled wrinkle strokes" created by himself has formed a unique vocabulary of modern magical ink painting.His fantastical and illusory representation seems to transport viewers to a surreal, magical realm of contemporary landscape beyond what is seen by the naked eyes.

許雨仁 (1951-)

HSU Yu-Jen

Hsu has broken through the existing boundaries of ink painting and is adept at using geometric patterns for the basic composition of his paintings. From old brush technique he developed a new way of expressing and thinking, with a minimalist but uninhibited and powerful visual sense expressing a domain of existence space that cannot be infringed on, implying endless life energy; with the precondition of freedom and liberation, he conveys his personal inner will, life horizon and his thoughts and reflections with regards the environment in which he exists.

LEE Kuang-Yu

It creates the unique form, style, and concept of the “void,” and demonstrates “the concept of silent void in the Oriental culture” that embodies the state of unifying the object and the self. It not only displays aesthetic values but also reveals the artist's contemplation on the state of life at that moment, conveying contemporary social implications.
