 Dreams as a royal road to the unconscious.  ––Sigmund Freud

Dream is the storage room of memory hidden in the depth of the brain. In dreams, consciousness and the subconscious linger between imagination and reality. Following the different visual angles and the changing space-time, story plots mixing the real and the unreal become interwoven in the brain. Only when waking up, the seemingly realistic scenes in dreams soon evaporate into thin air like illusory mirages. Dream, in an invisible way, gives us a fantastical realm waiting to be discovered and experienced. It also stimulates imagination and serves as a source of creativity. Artists absorb what the subconscious offers and transform fantasies hidden in the brain into creative inspiration. Dream’s Dwelling invites Liu Yun-Yi and Lu Yen-Yu respectively specialize in photography and ceramic art. Together, their works will guide us to enjoy a visual feast that goes beyond the real world.

With the eye of contemporary photography, Liu Yun-Yi focuses on the changes of architecture and landscape in the flow of time, through which she ponders on how the process of spatial changes affects the human psyche as well as how the progression of history has a consistent impact on humanity. Liu also utilizes the writing of dreams to expand her photographic work as a gesture to evoke emotional memory. She once dreamed of her home. Whereas the space in the dream matched the space in reality, there was an unknown rear space. As she further explored this rear space, it became increasingly complicated while being shrouded in primal blackness that seemed to harbor the known in its darkness and awaken the most primitive intuition and the subconscious.

Lu Yen-Yu combines appearances of animals with humanoid bodies to create various symbolically metamorphosed figures. The two seeming opposites of the natural creatures’ realistic, delicate appearances and their pensive facial expressions are blended in a perfect balance. Lu’s work often begins with simple sketch drawings that imaginatively grow through the artist’s molding and sculpting by hands guided by the blurry contours surfacing from the subconscious before turning into vividly tangible and fantastically charming creatures.

Liu’s photography unveils a mysterious, tranquil atmosphere in its architectural subject that transports the audience into an otherworld of past time. Lu’s non-human, non-animal creatures with endearing appearances gaze at the audience through their physical forms. Through the works of both artists, the audience seem to step into their dreams between reality and fantasies that immerse the spectator in a space of unlimited imagination.
