At Art Basel Hong Kong 2026, CHINI Gallery will present four major series by HSU Yu-Jen: Thin-brush Ink Painting Series, Rough-brush Ink Painting Series, Aquarene Painting Series, and Color Painting Series. Ranging from light, delicate lines to forceful, saturated strokes, and from the translucency of ink to the density of oil paint, these works unfold through contrast and juxtaposition. They reveal an artistic practice grounded in philosophical inquiry and marked by a fluid navigation across multiple media. For HSU Yu-Jen, the brushstroke is not merely a means of expression but a mode of existence—one that speaks of solitude, rhythm, and resistance to the noise of the present.
HSU Yu-Jen’s visual language is deeply informed by Daoist cosmology, the Eastern philosophy of the I Ching, and his long-term observation of Taiwan’s mountainous landscapes and coastal climates. Regardless of medium, his work opens a contemplative space—an emotional field that privileges distillation over representation. It is within these quiet fissures that HSU Yu-Jen’s artistic vocabulary emerges: solitary, resilient, and of enduring critical significance to contemporary ink discourse.
