Born in 1932, Ho Kan is a postwar Chinese master with ties to Nanjing, Taipei, and Milan. He learned calligraphy as a child from his grandfather, renowned calligrapher Huo Rui. In the 1950s, Ho Kan was influenced by Li Chun-Shan, a pioneer of Chinese modern art, in Taipei, and founded the avant-garde society "Ton-Fon Group". In the 1960s, he traveled to France and Italy to expand his knowledge, and participated in the "Punto International Art Movement" in Milan. His creations uniquely blend Chinese calligraphy, surrealism, and geometric abstraction, forging a distinctive path in painting.
Ho Kan has a strong connection with Hong Kong. In 1964, during his journey to Milan, he first visited Hong Kong via a cruise ship. To mark the 60th anniversary of this connection in 2024, his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, "Reunion," was held at Exchange Square in Central. In 2025, he collaborated with Wheelock Properties to present "Ho Kan @ Hong Kong" at the Peak Salon in the Wheelock Building, Central, showcasing 40 works, many shown for the first time. His art deeply resonates with Hong Kong's urban aesthetics. Wheelock's architecture and design beautifully present his work, blending Chinese international vision with French and Italian timeless tastes. The exhibition begins during Hong Kong Art Month in March, lasting nearly three months, offering a visual feast to a global audience.
