Overview

CHINI Gallery is proud to celebrate its twelfth anniversary at Art Taipei 2024, under the theme "East Meets West: 12 Years of Harmony." We will showcase works from eight distinguished artists: HO Kan (1932-), HSU Yu-Jen (1951-), LEE Kuang-Yu (1954-), TENG Pu-Chun (1957-), Christopher COOK (1959-), Cai Zhisong (1972-), Daniel PULMAN (1975-), and CHEN Cheng-Wei (1984-). This exhibition reflects CHINI Gallery 's fruitful journey in artistic exploration and cultural fusion, symbolizing the harmonious convergence of Eastern and Western thought and art.

At the entrance, we feature Cai Zhisong’s sculpture “Gazing”, part of his "Home" series. This piece magnifies the majestic image of a standing sika deer, inviting viewers to look up in respect. In Eastern culture, the deer is regarded as a spiritual animal, guiding the future and symbolizing auspiciousness; its bright platinum hue further enhances its sacred and elegant presence.

This year, the 92-year-old Chinese geometric abstraction pioneer HO Kan made his debut at Art Basel Hong Kong, where he held his first solo exhibition in the city. His new works on display continue to showcase strong geometric forms and vibrant color compositions, embodying the spirit of "simple yet profound" in geometric abstract art.

Daniel PULMAN delves into two-dimensional canvases, transforming the undulating layers of rock into organic three-dimensional structures. In his recent Guguan series, the gentle flow of stream water merges with the texture of rocks through abstract lines and figures, creating magnificent natural landscapes.

We are also excited to present the Taiwan debut of British artist Christopher COOK, featuring his meditative works “Fall and Rise” and “Trio”. Both pieces exemplify his representative monochromatic graphite style, with ink-like textures and flowing traces that guide viewers to explore the elements of creation, serendipity, and premonition embedded in the striking imagery.

Chinese artist CHEN Cheng-Wei focuses on the themes of the “Blossoms of Life”, symbolizing various levels of life experience. His works convey a deep longing for family and an exploration of life's meaning, allowing viewers to feel profound emotions in every stroke and hue.

HSU Yu-Jen, known for his delicate brushwork and rich emotional depth, continues the legacy of his large-scale summer retrospective at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum with his "Bold Stroke Series." This series breaks the traditional structure of ink painting, employing uncommon elongated vertical compositions that reveal the contemporary allure of ink art.

LEE Kuang-Yu's sculptures reflect profound philosophical and cultural insights. His work “Visiting Spring” features a solid hand form combined with classical lattice-like hollow structures, illustrating a transition from "fullness" to "hollowing out," thus expanding the diversity of spatial expression. He employs deconstruction and hollowing techniques to transcend traditional closed forms, creating a unique notion of "emptiness" that embodies the essence of "Eastern Void."

TENG Pu-Chun's new series explores the interplay of dense lines and ink, creating layers through the merging of landscapes. His piece “Solitary Rock” showcases his mastery of ink wash techniques, offering a unique interpretation of imagined natural scenery and inner spirit. The large-scale work is meticulously crafted, inviting viewers to experience not only visual impact but also deep emotional resonance.

This exhibition is not only a feast for the senses but also a journey into the beauty of East-West cultural fusion. CHINI Gallery looks forward to sharing this inspiration and charm with you, as we witness the infinite possibilities of art together.
