Overview

My works now are more compact, uncomplicated, self-contained, and assertive.

Contemplating the Original Point—The Oriental Abstract Language of HO Kan presents the works of this renowned Taiwanese abstract painter. The exhibition departs from the most basic elements in Ho’s paintings, which are points, lines, planes and color blocks, to explore how the artist has constructed his tranquil yet poetic abstract world. The “point” as the beginning of all things also represents the genesis of Ho’s individual imagination. In the images he created, accompanied with lines and color blocks, each of the points creates unique meanings according to how and where they are arranged. Whether the image that recovers the original simplicity or the philosophical world that embodies movement in stillness, the composition of Ho’s recent works has been simplified with his use of points, and the structure of lines and planes has also become more uncomplicated. The sporadic triangles, squares, and variable forms of changing lines create a compact visual rhythm, enabling a more delicate sense of subtle inner movement in the entire seemingly self-contained image and producing an even more individualized abstract language that is refinedly purer. This language is not excessively articulating; instead, it is mostly bright and clear, demonstrating more freedom in painting. The refined simplicity conveys a sense of poetry that allows the imaginative space to expand tranquilly and open up without end. Although Ho’s abstract language is constructed with the method of “reduction,” the result is that of addition and multiplication instead. He has constructed a more inclusive abstract world, which responds to the oriental philosophy that perceives infiniteness as all things are mutually embracing and nurturing.

All things start from a single point.

Every point is a universe of imagination.
