TSAI Meng-Chang

TSAI completely avoids the typical urban landscapes and instead, his paintings hover on the fringes of what we consider the city. The designs of the scenes in his images are paired with an understated palette, ranging from dark gray, unsaturated yellow, green, and other heavy brownish colors.

TSAI Meng-Chang was born in Kaohsiung in 1984. He graduated from the Creative Section of Graduate School of Fine Arts at the National Kaohsiung Normal University, currently lives and works in Chiayi.

TSAI completely avoids the typical urban landscapes and instead, his paintings hover on the fringes of what we consider the city. The designs of the scenes in his images are paired with an understated palette, ranging from dark gray, unsaturated yellow, green, and other heavy brownish colors. Despite the feeling of loneliness, the overall palette gives his works a sense of tender elegance. The seemingly tranquil, monotonous images exude a certain degree of ambiguity, as if they were waiting to be discovered. Reserved yet charming, they seem to be under a misty veil yet remain pure and untouched. Like emotions intentionally teased out, they are the everyday landscapes inhabited by people. With imagination, we write the memory of human beings, self-reflect, and even dream of the past or the future.

TSAI Meng-Chang is one of the few artists born in the 1980s who breaks away from flamboyant brushstrokes, exaggerated colors, and insincere healing, instead choosing a warm but unpretentious approach to convey concern for environmental changes. He shows us different faces of life under the same sunlight. TSAI won the "Kaohsiung Award and the 25th Kaohsiung Art Exhibition" Observer Special Award; he has been exhibited by Taipei Fine Arts Museum, MOCA Taipei, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Tainan Art Museum, Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Juming Museum.
