Born in Taipei in 1982, Chang Chia-Ying is a representative figure of the animation aesthetics in Taiwan. Chang received her BA in Oil Painting from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2005, and obtained an MFA in Plastic Arts from Tainan National University of the Arts in 2008. She was awarded the prize of Honorable Mention in Taipei Arts Award in 2006, and her works have been shown in New York, Switzerland, Italy, and China.
The unique style of Chang’s painting lies in her fairytale narratives. However, these fragmented and lost narrative clues render the meaning of the fairytales destabilized, and open up an intriguing imaginative space. Chang often appropriates well-known Eastern and Western fairytales. The characters in her elaborately created images always carry multiple implications. The greatest feature of her work is the imaginative, slightly eccentric images painted with superb skills and exact classical forms and composition.
