Born in Neiwei, Kaohsiung in 1954, Lee Kuang-Yu is a renowned sculptor who integrates Eastern philosophy and Western techniques. He has held solo exhibitions in New York, Venice, Spain, Austria, Japan, Singapore, etc. Lee graduated from Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Spain, and obtained his MFA from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain in the 1980s. After returning to Taiwan, he taught sculpture at Taipei National University of the Arts and National Taiwan University of Arts for over twenty years. He is deemed a representative sculptor that has imported Western sculptural concepts and techniques to Taiwan.
After retiring from teaching, Lee has been living and working in the mountains in Xizhi, and the seclusion of living in the remote area promoted the important transformation of his work. The artist used to depict weighty and substantial beauty; now, he portrays worldly existences and their implications in a subtle way and with sculpture interwoven with physical structure and blankness. Through the contrast and dialogue among the state of mind, the mountainous landscape, and the artistic conception of his work, he has created a unique style that integrates Western sculptural skills and Eastern humanistic meanings, fully embodying the perfect unison of the East and the West.
HO, Kan (1932-)
Born in Nanjing, China in 1932, Ho Kan lived in Milan, Italy for fifty years, and now lives in Taipei. He studied modern art under “the master of Taiwanese modern art,” Lee Chun-Shan, whose thinking and artistic techniques had a great and lasting impact on him. In 1956, Ho and other seven artists, including Li Yuan-Chia, Wu Hao, Oyan Wenyung, Hsia Yan, Hsiao Chin, Tommy Chen, Hsiao Ming-Hsien, co-founded “Ton Fan Art Group,” which was extremely influential to the development of modern art in Taiwan.
In 1964, the artist travelled to Milan. Influenced by Western artistic concepts like hard-edge abstraction, Ho incorporated Eastern elements such as calligraphy and seal carving to develop his unique Eastern abstract painting that was minimalistic yet rich in poetic expression. Ho introduced the method of reduction in his abstract art, rendering it minimalistic as well as poetic. He has constructed a more inclusive abstract world; it responds to the oriental philosophical idea that all things are mutually embracing and nurturing, which, in turn, gives birth to an infinite world. In 2016, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum presented the artist’s large-scale solo exhibition, Reverberations – HO KAN. His work has been exhibited in Italy, Switzerland, Taiwan, China, etc.
Jessica Pi-Hua HSU (1957-)
Jessica Pi-Hua Hsu was born in Yunlin, Taiwan in 1957, and is known for her painting of lyrical abstraction. Throughout the years, Hsu leads a simple, pastoral life in the mountains near Taipei, dividing her time for farming and art-making. Natural landscape is her teacher, and reading and painting constitute her life’s goal. Her artist career of nearly forty years is a tremendously colorful journey of transformation.
Hsu majored in education at National Cheng-Chi University in the 1970s. Later, she entered the graduate program of UC Berkeley to study art history, and majored in painting at the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, where her painting gradually shifted from figurative to abstract. Since the 1990s, she has embraced Buddhism, Taoism, flower arrangement, and pottery, which have imbued her elegant and unrestrained abstract painting with the spiritual quality characteristic to Eastern culture. Her painting embodies the state of Zen that is ethereal and carefree.

A well-known Taiwanese photographer, Chou Ching-Hui was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1965. Originally a photojournalist, Chou became a professional photographer to satisfy his longing for artistic creation. He always spends a long time staying at the chosen locations for photography, and has won numerous prizes and awards for his large-scale projects.
Throughout his career as a photographer that has lasted almost three decades, Chou’s subject matter has shifted from captivating journalistic events to creatively theatrical scenes, and his style has changed from documentary photography to fabricated photography. In his latest project, Animal Farm, Chou changed the role of photographer as a “hunter” and turned himself into a “director,” and amazed his audience with a bizarre and unsettling sense of existence in his characteristic way.
