月磋跎（局部） 宣紙、膠、彩墨 185×108.5cm 2014
2014.12.13 – 2015.01.18
In his 2014 solo show, the famous Taiwanese artist Liao Hung-Hsing will exhibit all-new work in ink. Moon Idling comprises “Moon” (月) and “Idling” (磋跎): the Moon is the home of the human soul, while “Idling” means to procrastinate. This moon represents beauty and eternity. Missing the moon’s beauty is humanity’s loss, but does no harm to the moon, whose beauty remains. In Mandarin, “moon” is a homonym of “surpass”, reflecting the artist’s living environment, in which he has experienced immoral, unrighteous humanity’s exploitation of the world incessantly worsening over time… As a result, he has developed a disappointed feeling of apathy and helplessness. Due to this, he hopes to use the artistic world of Moon Idling to pass on his contemplation on life, art, and the environment, and his longing for a place of uncorrupted beauty. The exhibits seem real yet remote, shading the moon shine, producing an ethereal heaven with clearness and brightness, tranquility, and kindness. The turmoil of the vulgar world is wholly excluded, and it is as if the observer finds themselves in a tranquil, clear, bright, beautiful world, their worried heart unburdened. Moon Idling is a haven developed by Liao Hung-Hsing through his brush, whether mist-veiled rivers and clouds, sunlight and air, beautiful stars, winter forests with red leaves, white reeds and waterfalls, or human shadows melting the night, heaven and earth have their own romantic poetry, the hues of the land teasing heartstrings and making them throb. Brush and ink express a mild, deep affection for home and country, the firmament of the cosmos, and the eternal moonlight. It is humanity’s endless desires and boundless demands which lie idle, allowing the beauty of the universe to live on!
