Held jointly by Gallery 101 and the Chini Gallery, the Images of the World in the Heart – Gallery 101 Natural Symphony Art Exhibition continues the Eastern artistic tradition of drawing inspiration from nature, and has “nature” and “art” as its themes. The work of three renowned Taiwanese artists, Lee Kuang-Yu, Teng Pu-Chun, and Tung Hsin-Ru, will be exhibited.  Forms of creation including ‘Modern Sculpture, ‘Abstract Oil Painting’ and ‘Futuristic Ink’, show how artists draw inspiration from nature and the world, merging the consciousness of their own lives with the natural world and using art to express the shifting beauty of nature.

This exhibition hopes to use art as an intermediary through which turquoise mountains and green water, shadow-draped trees and romantic flowers become beautiful scenes. Gathering such scenes makes art assume a new organic form possessed of natural strength and vitality. Facing internal development with a beautiful attitude brings the soul breathing space and accumulates richer potential, which in turn brings new vitality; this is a beautiful promise made by art to life.

About Artists

Born in Neiwei, Kaohsiung in 1954, Lee Kuang-Yu is a renowned sculptor who integrates Eastern philosophy and Western techniques. He has held solo exhibitions in New York, Venice, Spain, Austria, Japan, Singapore, etc. Lee graduated from Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Spain, and obtained his MFA from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain in the 1980s. After returning to Taiwan, he taught sculpture at Taipei National University of the Arts and National Taiwan University of Arts for over twenty years. He is deemed a representative sculptor that has imported Western sculptural concepts and techniques to Taiwan.

After retiring from teaching, Lee has been living and working in the mountains in Xizhi, and the seclusion of living in the remote area promoted the important transformation of his work. The artist used to depict weighty and substantial beauty; now, he portrays worldly existences and their implications in a subtle way and with sculpture interwoven with physical structure and blankness. Through the contrast and dialogue among the state of mind, the mountainous landscape, and the artistic conception of his work, he has created a unique style that integrates Western sculptural skills and Eastern humanistic meanings, fully embodying the perfect unison of the East and the West.

TENG, Pu-Chun (1957-)

Born in Hualien, Taiwan in 1957, Teng Pu-Chun is an incredibly talented artist of contemporary ink painting. Graduated from National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts), Teng leads a hermit-like life on the east coast of Taiwan. With aerial, exquisite brushstrokes, his work conveys a magical atmosphere. His unique ink painting is considered one of a kind among Taiwanese and Chinese artists, and exemplifies the essence of contemporary literati painting, which makes his works popular among collectors.

Teng’s painting integrates the techniques of the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming dynasties. At first glance, he seems to employ pointillism in his painting. In fact, it is the technique of “point wrinkling” invented by the artist himself. Each character and brushstroke is carefully and delicately wrinkled to create his stylistic painting. What amazes the audience the most is his spectacular use of colors and composition in portraying ordinary elements in nature such as mountains, streams, and trees. His painting transforms existing imagery of ink landscape, and constructs a fantastic atmosphere and surreal realms with implications materialized by his wondrous delineation. It is a great pleasure and joy to see his painting.

Tung Hsin-Ru was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1964. Her works have been collected by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, and have been shown in New York and Copenhagen. She majored in ink painting and graduated top of her class from the Department of Fine Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts. In 1990, she began her study in New York, which marked the turning point in her art.

Influenced by the abstract expressionism in New York, she started using square-shaped canvas or mixing different media to paint abstract painting. Throughout the years, she has kept exploring the inner space of the self.
