About Artists

Born in Neiwei, Kaohsiung in 1954, Lee Kuang-Yu is a renowned sculptor who integrates Eastern philosophy and Western techniques. He has held solo exhibitions in New York, Venice, Spain, Austria, Japan, Singapore, etc. Lee graduated from Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Spain, and obtained his MFA from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain in the 1980s. After returning to Taiwan, he taught sculpture at Taipei National University of the Arts and National Taiwan University of Arts for over twenty years. He is deemed a representative sculptor that has imported Western sculptural concepts and techniques to Taiwan.

After retiring from teaching, Lee has been living and working in the mountains in Xizhi, and the seclusion of living in the remote area promoted the important transformation of his work. The artist used to depict weighty and substantial beauty; now, he portrays worldly existences and their implications in a subtle way and with sculpture interwoven with physical structure and blankness. Through the contrast and dialogue among the state of mind, the mountainous landscape, and the artistic conception of his work, he has created a unique style that integrates Western sculptural skills and Eastern humanistic meanings, fully embodying the perfect unison of the East and the West.

Jessica Pi-Hua HSU (1957-)

Jessica Pi-Hua Hsu was born in Yunlin, Taiwan in 1957, and is known for her painting of lyrical abstraction. Throughout the years, Hsu leads a simple, pastoral life in the mountains near Taipei, dividing her time for farming and art-making. Natural landscape is her teacher, and reading and painting constitute her life’s goal. Her artist career of nearly forty years is a tremendously colorful journey of transformation.

Hsu majored in education at National Cheng-Chi University in the 1970s. Later, she entered the graduate program of UC Berkeley to study art history, and majored in painting at the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, where her painting gradually shifted from figurative to abstract. Since the 1990s, she has embraced Buddhism, Taoism, flower arrangement, and pottery, which have imbued her elegant and unrestrained abstract painting with the spiritual quality characteristic to Eastern culture. Her painting embodies the state of Zen that is ethereal and carefree.

TSAI, Shih-Hung (1979-)

Tsai Shih-Hung was born in Taiwan in 1979. He holds an MFA from Taipei National University of the Arts, and has won various prizes and awards throughout his decade-long career. He has been twice selected to represent Taiwan for residencies in Los Angeles and Hong Kong.

An art critic once described his painting as “philosophical poetry, dark yet profound.” Paying attention to different outcast and empty existences in contemporary life, Tsai excels in delineating the sense of marginality of things abandoned and exploring the boundary between the real and the unreal. Beneath the humorous images of his work, he often delivers serious social observations. The conflicting opposition in his work is what makes it so captivating.
